Description:

Transport cannot be decarbonised one mode at a time, but instead requires a holistic approach that recognises the greater efficiency of some energy pathways and the limited availability of sustainable biofuels. In this session, we will look at the different pathways and how to get them to the same level of maturity (on policy and to achieve full scale). We will discuss questions such as

• Can the grid cope with extra demand from Electric Transport be it cars, aircraft…

• Is the biofuel industry approaching a feedstock crunch? Are we in competition?

• Hydrogen infrastructure conundrum

Session:

Raising Ambition in Net Zero Flight: The 2030 sustainable aviation goals

Description:

Rapid action is required by both industry and governments if we are to establish a pathway to achieve zero-emission aviation by 2050. Cambridge had been leading a team that has been developing the 2030 Sustainable Aviation Goals, a set of actions that, if implemented by 2030, would significantly reduce the time required to achieve zero-emission aviation. This work is supported by the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA), an international group of experts who are developing evidence-based, whole-system modelling tools necessary to explore how policy, technology, and system integration could be utilised to accelerate change. The presentation will preview the four 2030 Sustainable Aviation Goals, each of which has been specifically targeted to raise ambition in a particular area of aviation.

Speaker/s:

Professor Rob Miller

Session:

Keynote: ADS Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Assessment Tool & GHG Reporting Guidance

Description:

Following the development of the ADS ESG Pathway; a comprehensive framework that guides SMEs through their transformative journey and towards their ESG goals.

SMEs are facing increased scrutiny over their operations and higher expectations from Primes and OEMs to improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. ADS Group Ltd has created these two new tools to UK organisations on their ESG journey:

  • Our new GHG Guidance gives information on how to report emissions and is specifically tailored to the aerospace and defence sectors.
  • Our ESG Assessment Tool (beta launch) is an AI powered assessment tool to analyse an organisations ESG maturity. By answering a series of questions, a company will receive a detailed report on their organisations environmental impact, social practices as well as ethical governance.

Description:

SAF Ambition vs. Delivery

According to DfT their new measures to support sustainable aviation fuel industry, along with the introduction of a SAF mandate in 2025, will provide fuel security, grow the economy and help to create new jobs by 2030. But is this enough to get us to target? What are the lessons learnt from the first transatlantic flight?

Session:

Panel: Carbon Removals, “not just an option – but a necessity”

Description:

Unsurprisingly, the IPCC's latest report (March, 2023) highlights the need to implement CO2 removal methods to achieve Net Zero CO2 or GHG. Air Canada, United Airlines, easyJet are among the airlines that have invested in carbon-capture technologies. Furthermore, UK ETS Reform July 2023 states aviation businesses need to buy allowances for every tonne of carbon emitted under the scheme.

Session:

Panel: Flight emissions and climate change: it’s not only about CO2

Description:

Despite scientific advancement many flight emissions calculators do not account for non-CO2 effects, resulting in a gross underestimation of the total climate footprint of a flight. In this session, we’ll discuss the non-CO2 effects. We’ll touch on the global assessment of contrails, uncertainties, and mitigation strategies. Our experts will update us on the latest science.

14:10 to 14:55

Session:

Panel: A Deep Dive into Finance

Description:

With the convergence of CSRD and CORSIA compliance pressures impacting aviation players within 2 years, it is natural to see an increase in transition, green and sustainability-linked financing in the aviation sector. However, while we’ve seen increasingly novel financing products, creditors are getting increasingly concerned about reputational and greenwashing litigation risk. The industry needs to develop more targeted KPIs in sustainability-linked financing to help prevent greenwashing, assess metrics to measure aircraft and engine efficiency and decarbonisation effectiveness and focus on decoupling CO2 emissions trends from capacity growth, amongst other objectives. In this session, we’ll also discuss how the Government sees their role in driving private investment into the Net Zero transition.

Session:

Panel: What makes a sustainable Airport

Description:

Airports have the opportunity to adopt low emission development strategies, optimise their energy and resource use, pioneer the use of electric vehicles within their estates, embed circular economy principles as they build new capacity, and drive socially valuable outcomes for local populations. In this session, we’ll discuss the opportunities and challenges they face developing highly integrated approaches.

16:00 to 16:45

Session:

Panel: Accelerating development and deployment

Description:

There are different technologies enabling the reduction of carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency and they could be deployed far faster than SAF or Hydrogen. Since these potential benefits are relevant to all fuel types, they will contribute to both the short and long term decarbonisation of aviation. In this session we will focus on the adoption of a continuous improvement process, where small incremental changes add up to formidable positive change.
